So when we left Utah I kidnapped my mom. She came and helped me unpack and then caught a flight home. Luckily she didn’t have to leave until Katie’s first day of T-K.
In California they offer a Transitional Kindergarten for anyone who’s birthday falls between September and December of the year that misses the cut off for kindergarten. This was frustrating because the state law said that for this school year the cut off was Oct 1st but our school districted had elected to take the following year’s cut off early which was Sept 1st. This meant that Katie couldn’t start Kindergarten and would have to do another year of preschool. As a mom I was so frustrated because she had already done 2 years of preschool and we expected her to start kindergarten.
Anyway just after Katie’s birthday in September they did an assessment on her and found that she was advanced for her T-K class. So much so that they had her skip the grade and move in to Kindergarten. When upon arriving in Kindergarten they did another assessment to see where she was compared to the rest of the class. This assessment came back that she was advanced in her writing, reading, and math skills thus placing her at the top of her new class. We are so proud of her and she is loving being in Kindergarten even if she is the youngest by over a full year.
